About The Department
The Department of Marathi was established in 1971. The department offers UG and PG
courses in Marathi. The department facilitates research in Marathi and has recently
introduced a Ph.D. Program in Marathi. The faculty in the department is well
experienced and two are the recipients of State level awards for their creative writing. The
department has been playing a crucial role in the preservation of the Marathi language.
Every year the department celebrates MarathiBhasha Gaurav Din(Marathi Rajbhasha Din)
and organizes different programs to make students aware of the significance of Marathi
as a first language. The department conducts training sessions to motivate students to
creative writing in Marathi. Every year the department also publishes a handwritten-
Manuscript Palavi, a collection of poems composed by students. The department also
conducts many workshops,Conferences, seminars /webinars, and Poetry Festivals at
International, National & State Levels to make students aware of the recent trends and
job opportunities available in the Marathi language. The department also runs a
Certificate Course in Sambhashan Kaushalya (Communication Skill) and
ChitrapatAaswad Ani Parikshan(Aesthetic sense of movie) to develop the aesthetic sense
of the students.

About
A certificate course in Marathi for business has been launched with the aim of equipping students. There is a
literary basis for courses in Marathi along with soft skills required for professional purposes. But students can
hardly develop communication skills. This course also lacks training. The Certificate Course in Marathi has been
developed keeping in mind the basic needs of the students for practical purposes.
One of the reasons why a student cannot communicate in standard Marathi is lack of systematic training.
Lacking confidence, they cannot communicate effectively. Many of these students are from rural and tribal areas.
Proper training of film appreciation and review is an important aspect as many aspects are lacking in this field.
This certificate course is designed to provide proper grooming to overcome the problem of training in Marathi.
So that students can communicate effectively in standardized Marathi language. The certificate course also aims to
develop other soft skills like writing skills of the students.

Annual Publication of Marathi Poetry Manuscript ‘Palavi’
Objectives of the Practice:
1.To avail a platform to the students to express their thoughts, ideas, feeling and emotions.
2.To encourage the art of creative writing among students.
3.To preserve an ancient art of manuscript writing.
4.To preserve the native mother tongue Marathi in an age of multilingualism and multiculturalism
5.To create a generation of Marathi writers who can contribute effectively to Marathi literature.
The Context
In this age of information technology, the art of writing seems to vanish rapidly. Since the information regarding all fields is available on the computer and mobile screen the students have easy access to the information. As a result, students neither visit the libraries nor do they spend hours together searching and reading or taking down notes. Moreover, the shortened, symbolic language used in mobile text messages affects their language negatively. Naturally, their ability to write elaborately has been affected and they cannot write in the correct manner. As far as self-expression is concerned either they do not have appropriate words to express their feeling or they are unable to coordinate those words in a proper way. It is obvious that when they try to express themselves. they are far away from what they want to say. It seems that the new generation cannot produce creative writing with substance and good literary qualities.
The Practice:
The Department of Marathi has identified the significance of manuscript writing. Manuscript writing is an ancient art of writing. The state of Maharashtra has a rich tradition of manuscript writing. The great literary masterpieces of the earliest phases were written in the form of manuscripts. This art has played a unique role in unfolding the history of the particular period. Manuscripts are also referred to by researchers, scholars and historians as a research tool to know
more about the history and related details of a certain period. As the manuscript is a handwritten script, it has a touch of individuality. Taking into consideration all the special features of the art of manuscript writing the Department of Marathi every year compiles the Manuscript of Marathi Poetry Palavi. The poems in the manuscript are composed by the students. The Manuscript is compiled in the fond memory of late Smt. Renukaajji Bhausaheb Hiray, the earliest founder and promoter of the institutes Adivasi Seva Samiti and Mahatma Gandhi Vidhymandir. So far, the Department has complied 13 Manuscripts of Palavi. All the poems in the Palavi reveal the mature and objective expressions of the students on different social issues
At the beginning of every academic year, the department conducts training sessions for the students to guide them on how to write in the correct manner. Many Poets and Literary writers are invited as Resource Persons for the training sessions. They sensitize students to different social issues and develop their social points of view. They are trained in how to think and organize their thought processes. They are also guided for expressing themselves in an appropriate literary fashion. They are exposed to great literary masterpieces and manuscripts. The training sessions prove to be very significant. They reconnect students with the traditional value system and awaken in them strong literary sensibilities. Thus, the students are inspired to express themselves on different social issues intensely but objectively.
After the initial training session, the inspired group of students is provided with the project papers to express themselves in the most beautiful way. The provision of the project papers gives uniformity to the manuscript and makes the compiling of the literary compositions attractive. The students are very much eager to contribute to the manuscript as their own compositions and handwriting is going to be preserved in the form of the manuscript. Soon the department gets a well-furnished copy of the manuscript Palavi with different handwriting, different thoughts and unique touch of individuality. The department also organizes the publication of the Palavi.
Evidence of Success
There are eleven manuscripts of Palavi in the department of Marathi. Each manuscript has near about 400 poems on different social issues. As the poems are composed by the students, every poem is unique in itself. The collection of the manuscript has definitely added to the Marathi literary output. The manuscript Palavi avails a platform to the students where they can express their thoughts and feelings without any inhabitation. The manuscript helps to explore the subtle talents of the students. Thus, students can reinvent themselves. The manuscript Palavi helps to boost the self-confidence of the students. There has been a significant increase in the number of students participating in various state-level competitions. Students seem to be sensitized to different social issues. Since they are exposed to various resource persons their literary sensibilities are developed. They are acquainted with various literary forms. They seem to be more creative and research-oriented. The practice of manuscript writing has sensitized students to the concept of good handwriting. The students seem to be keener about correct and neat handwriting. The manuscript writing has proved to be an engaging co-curricular activity too.
Problems Encountered and Resources Required:
Initially, it becomes difficult to convince students that they can write. They have the misconception that it is only literary writers or poets who can write or compose a poem. So, the obvious response of the students is that they are not writers or poets. Creating confidence among the students regarding their ability to write seems to be the biggest challenge. Then there is a long process of developing their literary sensibilities and social point of view. It seems that the students are lost in the world of imagination and most of the time are subjective in expression. It is a challenge to encourage them to write in an objective manner and with social commitment. In an age of science and technology, students seem to be more occupied with technology and job-oriented courses. In the last few decades language studies have been at the back front which is a challenge to cope up with. Since training, composition, manuscript writing and publication require a long time, so time constraint is also one of the challenges.
